How to Create and Use Customer Groups
Group customers such as retail or wholesale, optionally set a default discount, and assign the group when you add or edit a customer.
Step 1
Open Customer groups
In the dashboard sidebar, under Catalog, open Customer groups. Groups organize customers the way product categories organize products. They do not replace the customer record.
Step 2
Create a group
Click Add customer group. Enter a clear name, such as Wholesale or Retainers. Save the name before relying on the group in customer forms.
Step 3
Set a default discount only if every member should get it
Default discount is optional. Choose No discount when the group is only a label. A percent or amount discount applies as the starting discount for customers in the group. It does not change invoices that were already saved.
Step 4
Assign the group to customers
Open New customer or edit an existing customer and choose the group in Customer group. You can leave the field empty. Deleting a group clears that assignment on its customers. It does not delete the customers.
Common questions
What is a customer group used for?
A customer group labels customers, such as retail or wholesale, and can store a default discount. Assign it on the customer so new documents start from those terms.
Does a group discount change old invoices?
No. The default discount is a starting value for customers in the group. Invoices already saved keep the amounts they were created with.
What happens if I delete a customer group?
Customers in that group stay in Customers. Their group assignment is cleared.
Expected outcomes
- A named customer group exists
- Customers in that group can inherit its default discount
